Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) is a surgical procedure which is performed using special instruments for small or no incisions at all. Conventional open abdominal surgeries for gynecological conditions generally require longer hospital stays, larger incisions and a longer recovery period than minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery.
Much gynecologic surgery is still performed using very large incisions. The benefits of MIS typically include smaller incisions, less postoperative pain, less need for pain medication, faster recovery and quicker return to work and normal daily activities.
It is important to note MIS is not necessarily minor surgery in which only local anesthesia is required. In fact, most MIS procedures still require general anesthesia to be administered beforehand. While each patient is responsible for her own body and the final treatment decision, input from the physician is a key component.
