Northwest Allied Physicians is proud to announce the addition of cardio-thoracic surgeon Dr. Luis Rosado-Lopez to its medical staff. Dr. Rosado specializes in “beating heart” bypass surgery.
Cardiac bypass surgery has made great strides with technologies enabling surgeons to perform the procedure without having to put the patient’s heart on a heart-lung machine. With traditional cardiac bypass surgery, the heart is stopped. Blood flow to the body is dependent on the heart-lung machine which removes carbon dioxide from the blood and replaces it with oxygen before pumping it through the body. The bypass is conducted on the “still” heart.
The beating heart, or “off-pump” bypass, eliminates the need for the heart-lung machine. The surgeon can stabilize sections of the heart for the bypass while the rest of the heart pumps blood to the body. Any artery may be bypassed off-pump.
Dr. Rosado explains the benefits to cardiac patients of avoiding use of the heart lung machine. “Beating heart surgery reduces the need for blood transfusions, decreases the risk of stroke during or immediately following the surgery, and reduces the risk of bleeding and kidney failure. Post-surgical hospital stay is shorter and patient outcomes are better with the off-pump procedure.”
According to Dr. Rosado, “High risk patients are excellent candidates for beating heart surgery. Those patients often have additional diseases such as kidney failure, peripheral vascular disease, lung disease or have previously suffered a stroke.”
